MOMS Pharmacy and Under One Roof Partner to Create Community Resource Center for People Living With HIV/AIDS

Center will offer education, support, and specialty pharmacy services in the heart of the Castro District

San Francisco –  MOMS Pharmacy, a specialty HIV/AIDS pharmacy, and Under One Roof, a non-profit organization that funds 28 Bay area AIDS Service Organizations, have launched an innovative partnership to create a Community Resource Center for people living with HIV/AIDS in the heart of San Francisco’s Castro District.  The build-out of the new center is near completion with an anticipated opening date of February 9, 2009.

The Under One Roof Community Resource Center will share space with MOMS at the pharmacy’s newest location, 4071 18th Street.  MOMS has dedicated half of the 2,000 square foot space to the center, which will include a “living room” for patients, a Community  Resource Wall, a Client Advocate, and a Community Outreach Office for the ASOs supported by Under One Roof.

MOMS Pharmacy recently relocated from a smaller location at the Davies Medical Campus.  Its new location allows the pharmacy to work more closely with ASOs in providing a safe and welcoming place for people living with HIV/AIDS to access educational and community resources and specialty pharmacy care.

“Under One Roof and MOMS Pharmacy share a strong commitment to the HIV/AIDS community serviced by the sponsored ASO’s,” said Anthony Luna, Vice President of MOMS Pharmacy, “and we are both pleased to provide a central space for them to expand their reach of valuable education and services to those living with HIV/AIDS.”

With decreased public funding, ASOs have struggled to keep up with the needs of the HIV/AIDS community.  High rental rates often make it impossible for ASOs to exist within the communities they serve.  This innovative partnership allows Under One Roof’s beneficiary ASOs a presence in the Castro District and the ability to offer a broader continuum of  service to their clients.

“This is a valuable opportunity for our ASOs to have important street level outreach in the Castro” said Under One Roof’s Executive Director and General Manager, Mark Burns.  “Under One Roof is excited to be coordinating this project and is grateful to MOMs Pharmacy for the generous contributions they are making so that our ASOs’ programs can have enhanced visibility and reach.”

The Community Resource Center will be designed to make education, information, and specialty pharmacy care more accessible to clients.  The center’s “living room” will act as a waiting area for the pharmacy during the day and as an informal community meeting venue after hours.  It will feature a flat screen TV streaming information about local ASOs that can also be used for HIV/AIDS educational programs and PowerPoint presentations.

A private outreach office will be made available to the 28 ASOs on a rotational basis for individual client counseling, treatment, and education.  A resource wall will display program and service information on the 28 ASOs.

MOMS Pharmacy will continue to offer its specialty HIV/AIDS medication services from within the Community Resource Center.  These include free delivery, a refill reminder program, insurance coordination, and a range of custom medication packaging options; including the MOMsPak.
